James Long (Masons) Ltd is a firm of monumental masons based in Trowbridge, Wiltshire which has been in existence for over 220 years. In fact, mention is made of a stonemason’s yard in the Deeds of the property going back to the seventeen hundreds. We pride ourselves on being the oldest established producers of both traditional and modern memorials in the West of England.
It is and has always been a family run business. Leonard White purchased the business from James Long in 1936 and ran it with his son Peter until Leonard’s passing in 1952. Peter then continued until his retirement in 2000. On his retirement, Peter entrusted the business to Jason Willcox, a long standing employee who joined in 1986 as a Junior Apprentice who went on to gain experience as Yard Manager, General Manager and Company Director. Jason has now owned the business for fourteen years and along with his wife Deborah strives to continue with the strong values on which the company has been built upon. The next generation is currently being trained. Their son Samuel is the new Junior Apprentice.
We have ‘moved with the times’ as far as methods of production are concerned. We now use modern machinery to carry out many of the time consuming operations, which means that we can manufacture memorials in stone, marble and granite at realistic prices. Hand carving, hand lettering and traditional craftsmanship are still an extensive part of our work. We extend a warm welcome to anyone who wishes to visit our works to see ‘how things are done’.
Each memorial, from a simple tablet to the most elaborate headstone and kerb enclosure receives individual and caring attention. Every memorial is special, and should be treated as such.
